First Canadian built Lysander. Accepted by RCAF 1 September 1939. Delivered in overall aluminum finish. With No. 110 (Army Co-operation) Squadron, RCAF Station Rockcliffe, Ontario, in silver finish, January 1940. Operated by No. 111 (Army Co-operation) Squadron, RCAF Station Patricia Bay, British Columbia, 1940/1941, coded "TM*A", in full camouflage. Also with No. 112 (Army Co-operation) Squadron, RCAF Station Rockcliffe, Ontario, in 1940. Used by No. 122 (K) Squadron, RCAF Station Patricia Bay, British Columbia, as a target tug, 1942 to 1943. Assigned to No. 3 Repair Depot on 15 Sep 1943 probably after a crash. Not repaired.
Aircraft under restoration at Vintage Wings Canada is a Mk. III with Bristol Mercury engine, marked as 416 but exact origin is not clear. First engine run in April 2010.

The a/c was assigned to No. 34 Service Flying Training School in Medicine Hat, Alberta. The a/c was airborne on a test flight when it suffered a Category "A" crash on 22 September 1941. The a/c was performing authorized low flying when it flew into rising ground near Suffield, Alberta. Squadron Leader K.L. Ashfold and Flying Officer B.F. Langmack were both killed.

Operated by No. 118 (B) Squadron, from RCAF Station Saint John, New Brunswick, 1939 to 1940. With Test & Development Flight at RCAF Station Rockcliffe, Ontario. Category "C" damage on 13 Aug 1940 when the a/c was hit by a gust of wing while taxying, hit a hole off the tarmac and nosed over. Serving with No. 2 Coastal Artillery Co-operation Detachment when a Category "C" accident occurred on 3 Oct 1941, coded "TQ-B". The a/c was taxiing out for take-off when it hit a ditch under construction, damaging the prop and cowling. Still with No. 2 Coastal Artillery Co-operation when a Category "A" crash occurred at Dartmouth, NS on 24 July 1942. The a/c took off on a photographic mission and ran out of fuel as the a/c had not been properly serviced prior to the flight. The pilot attempted to reach an open field in the vicinity of Dutch Village but crashed short of the field into some trees. The pilot was seriously hurt and the photographer suffered minor injuries.

Originally built at Malton, Ontario in June 1942. Assigned initially to No. 4 Training Command and used by No. 8 Bombing & Gunnery School at RCAF Station Lethbridge, Alberta. Transferred to No. 2 Air Command as of 1 Dec 1944. Awaited disposal instructions with No. 2 Air Command as of 5 Jan 1945. Stored post-war at Swift Current, Saskatchewan, and noted with 414:00 airframe hours; never overhauled when struck off.
It was retired from the RCAF in 1946 and then sold to a Prairie farmer. The airframe was donated to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum by Dennis Bradley and Alan Ness in 1975. In 1983, the "Friends of Canadian Warplane Heritage" started restoring it at Niagara Falls Airport, NY. The project was transferred back to Hamilton in October 1996 and the Lysander finally flew again for the first time in over sixty years in 2009. The aircraft displays the black and yellow stripes of a BCATP air gunnery target tug. Under restoration to static in 2021.

Circa 1977, this a/c was acquired & preserved by H. Whereatt in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. It was acquired by Vintage Wings of Canada in Gatineau, Quebec, in 2007. After a full restoration, it first flew 18 Jun 2010. It is painted in No. 400 "City of Toronto" Squadron markings, and it is finished in doped silver overall with RCAF serial number #416.

Lysander P1733 was built to contract 611814/37 by Westland Aircraft Co Ltd. at Yeovil and was delivered into RAF MU storage in December 1939. After acceptance it was issued to 4 Squadron at Ringway in 1940 probably as a replacement for the unit after they lost aircraft in the Battle of France, it arrived at Ringway towards the end of May 1940.

The aircraft moved with unit to Linton-on-Ouse on 8th June 1940 and sustained Cat.R/FA damage in the incident detailed above on 28th June 1940. It dismantled on site and returned to works for repair. On an unknown date in 1941 it was issued to 8 AACU at Gosport. Later in 1941 it was transferred to 12 Gp.AAC Flt at Digby and then to 288 Squadron which formed from 12 Gp.AAC Flt at Digby on 18th November 1941.It was transferred to 51 OTU at Cranfield in March 1942 as a Hack aircraft, then onto 1495 TT Fit in August 1942 at Sawbridgeworth.

It finally ended it's days at 2 AAPC at Langham and was finally struck off charge on 12th January 1944.

Reconnaissance Ruhr Valley 1940-06-28 to 1940-06-28

4 (R) Sqn (RAF) RAF Linton-on-Ouse

On 28th June 1940 the crew of this 4 Squadron aircraft were undertaking a dusk patrol of the North Sea off the Yorkshire Coast. While returning to base at Linton on Ouse they darkness became a problem and they became lost, the pilot tried to force land the aircraft in a field near Wigginton but struck high tension cables and crashed soon afterwards at 22.45hrs. The aircraft sustained damage in the field near Broad Oak Farm but this was deemed repairable and it was taken away for repair. There is a suggestion that this landing may have been made on or near the Plainville relief landing ground, between Huby and Wigginton.

With No. 110 (AC) Squadron, RCAF when it crashed on 19 January 1941, 2 miles west of Odiham. Engine lost power shortly after take off, flew into raising ground. Also reported as controlled flight into terrain, encountered mist while night flying. Official report states "The accident was almost certainly due to loss of control in black-out conditions shortly after takeoff". Pilot Flight Lieutenant A.H.F. Alloway killed. Alloway's mother was a reporter for the Winnipeg Tribune, owned by Montreal millionaire J.W. McConnell. McConnell paid for several "presentation" aircraft during the war, including Spitfire W3441, named "Alloway", presented in June 1941. Also killed was mechanic passenger, Sgt. G. Wright.

Originally saw service with Nos. 4, 225 and 613 Sqns in the RAF. Disassembled and shipped to Canada. Assembled at Central Aircraft, converted to target tug during assembly. To No. 4 Training Command on 23 January 1943, for use at No. 2 Bombing & Gunnery School at Mossbank, Saskatchewan. To No. 2 Air Command on 1 December 1944, and to storage same day. Pending disposal from 5 January 1945. Some surviving components of this airframe were purchased by a private individual in 2007 and eventually it went on display at the Florida Air Museum in Lakeland, Florida. It was then acquired by Kermit Weeks Fantasy of Flight Museum and was painted in a temperate sea scheme (extra dark sea grey and dark slate grey over sky) and marked as BA-C serial #V9545. Later acquired by Aircraft Restoration Company in Duxford. Registered as G-CCOM to Propshop Ltd, in Duxford. Undergoing a long term restoration planned to fly at Duxford in 2018.
