The de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito was a British twin-engine shoulder-winged multi-role combat aircraft, introduced during the Second World War. It was one of few operational front-line aircraft of the era whose frame was constructed almost entirely of wood. Nicknamed The Wooden Wonder, it was affectionately as the "Mossie" to its crews. The total number of DH98 Mosquito aircraft built was 7,781, the type serving with the main Allied air forces, including both the United States and Russia.

When Mosquito production began in 1941 it was the fastest propeller driven operational aircraft in the world. The first variant was an unarmed, high-speed, high-altitude photo-reconnaissance aircraft. Originally conceived as an unarmed fast bomber, the Mosquito's use evolved during the war into many roles including low to medium-altitude daytime tactical bomber, high-altitude night bomber, pathfinder, day or night fighter, fighter-bomber, intruder, and maritime strike aircraft. It was also used by the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) as a fast transport to carry small high-value cargoes to, and from, neutral countries, through enemy-controlled airspace. The crew of two, pilot and navigator, sat side by side, but a single passenger could ride in the aircraft's bomb bay when necessary.

The Mosquito FB Mk. VI was often flown in special raids, such as Operation Jericho, an attack on Amiens Prison in early 1944, and precision attacks against military intelligence, security and police facilities (such as Gestapo headquarters). On the 10th anniversary of the Nazi' seizure of power in 1943, a morning Mosquito attack knocked out the main Berlin broadcasting station while Hermann Goering was speaking, putting his speech off the air. Goering later said: "It makes me furious when I see the Mosquito. I turn green and yellow with envy. There is nothing the British do not have. They have the geniuses and we have the nincompoops."

The Mosquito flew with the RCAF and other air forces in the European, Mediterranean and Italian theatres. After the end of the Second World War Spartan Air Services flew 10 ex-RAF Mosquitoes, mostly B.35's plus one of only six PR.35's built, for high-altitude photographic survey work in Canada. One of 12 PR.Mk. XVI's allocated to the RAAF. Disassembled and shipped to Sydney, arriving on 24 Nov 1944. Delivered to 87 (PR) Sqn RAAF at Coomalie Creek. Flew approximately 20 photo reconnaissance sorties up to the end of hostilities with Japan. Transferred to RAAF Survey Flight and flew 19 high-altitude photo surveys over Australia Sept-Dec 1946.

Declared unserviceable in early 1947 due to undiagnosed handling issues. Became ground instructional airframe with Air & Ground Radio School. Listed for disposal by the RAAF on 25 Nov 1954. Was not sold until 1957 to farmer Ern Voullaire, who cut off the outer wings and trailered it to his farm.

NS631 sat derelict until 1966 when it was sold to the Warbirds Aviation Museum for potential restoration. Moved to indoor storage until resale in 1983 to a local group who began some restoration work. Deciding the work was beyond their resources, NS631 was traded to RAAF 503 Wing for future museum display in 1987. Restoration work was begun at Richmond and the aircraft was then transferred to the RAAF Museum in 1998. Work was resumed in 2002 and is continuing.

Delivered to RAF Benson as replacement aircraft. Assigned to 544 (PR) Sqn. The 544 Sqn ORB shows that NS639 flew approximately 12-14 PR missions over northern Europe and Scandinavia between Aug and Dec 1944, photographing rail lines. While in the Magdeburg area on 16 Sep 1944, Flight Lieutenant Dodd and Flight Sergeant Hill evaded 8 attacks by a pair of Me262's, out-turning the jets every time they approached for a firing pass. The 28 Dec 1944 entry lists a "Special Courier" flight to Athens, after which NS639 is transferred to to the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces (MAAF) and does not return to 544 Sqn operations until 25 Apr 1945. Sent into storage with 44MU (likely in Scotland) 5 Aug 1945. Transferred to Royal Navy at NAS Stretton 25 Apr 1947, most likely used for training or stored as a spare training aircraft. Appears to have been repainted in overall silver with yellow band.

One of a group of 6 Mosquitos (at least 5 were PR.Mk. XVI's) sold as surplus by the RN to aircraft broker R.A. Short on 18 May 1956 and issued civil registration G-AOCI. All were ferried to Thruxton airfield in England. Three were flown to Independent Air Travel Ltd. at Hurn for refurbishment in Aug 1956 and eventual re-sale to the Israeli Air Force by the end of the year. The other 3 (NS639, NS753, RG173) were found to have corrosion in the control cables and were declared non-airworthy. They remained at Thruxton for several years, possibly cannibalized for parts and/or vandalized before the hulks were burned in Oct 1960.

Mosquito aircraft NS 943 was part of a 464 Squadron force of 12 aircraft detailed to carry out night intruder operations in the Sternberg area including bombing Bremen, Germany, and bomb and strafe railway junctions, trains, engines, sidings, villages. NS 943 failed to return from the mission. Killed were RCAF F/O's P.J. Baker (pilot) and C.A. Lee (navigator).
