BCATP Casualties 1939-1945
CASPIR records 1,737 people who died in training in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan in Canada, most of them in flying accidents. This map shows them at their schools, month by month, by the aircraft they died in: each silhouette grows with the number of people killed in that type at that school. Press Play to watch the losses build from April 1940 to August 1945, and click a school for the names.

Each person is shown at the school they belonged to, at its main station on the date (a school that moved is shown at its new station from the date of the move); crash sites are not recorded, so a death at a relief field or elsewhere is shown at the school. Silhouette area is the number of deaths, and the number on each silhouette is that number of people killed. A disc is a death with no aircraft recorded (illness, drowning, road accidents and the like); it is drawn only where no aircraft death is shown, such as at manning depots, and the click-through list always names everyone. The BCATP trained men and women from across the Commonwealth: each person's own service (RCAF, RAF, RAFVR, RAAF, RNZAF, Fleet Air Arm ...) is shown after their name. The Canadians only box (off to begin with) keeps those whose nationality in CASPIR is Canada; Newfoundlanders are recorded separately and are not included, because Newfoundland was a separate Dominion and did not join Canada until 31 March 1949.
