The de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito was a British twin-engine shoulder-winged multi-role combat aircraft, introduced during the Second World War. It was one of few operational front-line aircraft of the era whose frame was constructed almost entirely of wood. Nicknamed The Wooden Wonder, it was affectionately as the "Mossie" to its crews. The total number of DH98 Mosquito aircraft built was 7,781, the type serving with the main Allied air forces, including both the United States and Russia.

When Mosquito production began in 1941 it was the fastest propeller driven operational aircraft in the world. The first variant was an unarmed, high-speed, high-altitude photo-reconnaissance aircraft. Originally conceived as an unarmed fast bomber, the Mosquito's use evolved during the war into many roles including low to medium-altitude daytime tactical bomber, high-altitude night bomber, pathfinder, day or night fighter, fighter-bomber, intruder, and maritime strike aircraft. It was also used by the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) as a fast transport to carry small high-value cargoes to, and from, neutral countries, through enemy-controlled airspace. The crew of two, pilot and navigator, sat side by side, but a single passenger could ride in the aircraft's bomb bay when necessary.

The Mosquito FB Mk. VI was often flown in special raids, such as Operation Jericho, an attack on Amiens Prison in early 1944, and precision attacks against military intelligence, security and police facilities (such as Gestapo headquarters). On the 10th anniversary of the Nazi' seizure of power in 1943, a morning Mosquito attack knocked out the main Berlin broadcasting station while Hermann Goering was speaking, putting his speech off the air. Goering later said: "It makes me furious when I see the Mosquito. I turn green and yellow with envy. There is nothing the British do not have. They have the geniuses and we have the nincompoops."

The Mosquito flew with the RCAF and other air forces in the European, Mediterranean and Italian theatres. After the end of the Second World War Spartan Air Services flew 10 ex-RAF Mosquitoes, mostly B.35's plus one of only six PR.35's built, for high-altitude photographic survey work in Canada. Converted to T.Mk. 43 on the production line and re-serialled as A52-1053. One of 8 dual-control trainers purchased by New Zealand (for $3000) to train crews for the 76 FB.Mk. VI's flown from the UK. Remained in storage for its service life and was retired in 1952.

Sold in April 1953 (also given as 1955) to a farmer who cut off the outer wings and towed it to his farm in Marton. Stripped for parts and the remains were stored on his farm. In 1967 (also given as 1964) the hulk was donated to the Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland.

Long-term restoration for static display was begun. Wing was rebuilt by the RNZAF Museum and mated with fuselage in 2005. Standing on undercarriage by 2007. Completed in 2011 in RNZAF markings as NZ2305 but with nose bowl and 4 machine guns of an FB.MK. VI.

Built 1946 as FB.Mk. 40. After completion, inspection revealed defects in the wing construction. The wing was subsequently removed and the rest of the airframe put into storage. Later returned to the production line with a new wing and converted to dual-control T.Mk. 43. Re-serialled as A52-1054. Taken on strength with RAAF but placed in storage. One of four T.Mk. 43's purchased by RNZAF. Taken on strength 13 Jun 1947 with serial NZ2308 and assigned to 75 Sqn. Retired in early 1950's and placed in long-term storage at Woodbourne with 479 hours on the airframe. Declared surplus on 30 Jun 1955.

One of up to 27 Mosquitos sold to ANSA Orchard Equipment Co., of Nelson. Stored outdoors on a farm at Riwaka until recovered by the Museum of Transport and Technology in the 1960's. Passed to Owyn Fenner, who formed a syndicate to rebuild NZ2308 to flying condition. Another member of the syndicate was Glyn Powell, who collected drawings, parts, and other wrecks and formed Mosquito Aircraft Restorations to build fuselage moulds and other jigs. NZ2308 was to be the first Mosquito to rebuilt by Powell but the project was displaced by the rebuild of Jerry Yagen's Mosquito FB.Mk. 26 KA114. Work continued slowly as other Mosquitos were completed for paying customers but remained unfinished when Powell passed away in 2019. Assembly was taken up by Avspecs Ltd. in Ardmore. Registered as ZK-PWL 8 Feb 2024. First post-restoration flight 18 Mar 2024 piloted by Steve Hinton of Planes of Fame. Will fly airshows in New Zealand in its current RNZAF markings in 2024 before delivery to Lewis Air Legends in San Antonio TX.

Converted to PR.Mk. 41 on the production line and re-serialled as A52-319. Delivered to RAAF Feb 1948 and spent most of its time in storage.
Bought by James Woods/ Woods Airways, Perth and was entered in London to Christchurch Air Race. Entry later withdrawn due lack of sponsorship. Issued civil registration VH-WAD named "The Quokka" 23.9.53, later ferried to Perth WA. Stored in hangar, Perth Airport until 1963. Loaned to Air Force Association and displayed Perth Airport Jan 1963-Jul 1967 in a compound with Lancaster NX622. Airframe became derelict and was moved to airport dump Jul 1967-1969. Bought by James A. Harwood, Perth but fuselage badly damaged during dismantling 8 Jan 1969; stored dismantled in warehouse, Perth until 1972. Sold to
Ed A. Jurist/ Vintage Aircraft International, Nyack NJ 1969. Sold to David M. Kubista, Tucson AZ Jun 1971. Shipped to USA from Fremantle 23 May 1972 on S.S. Manora, but was off-loaded at Melbourne due to fees owed; stored Port of Melbourne 1972-1979.
Auctioned to recover shipping & storage costs 22 Jan 1979. Bought by Australian War Memorial, Canberra 22 Jan 1979.
Static restoration Hawker de Havilland Australia Pty Ltd at Sydney-Bankstown NSW 1979-1996, completed at AWM Mitchell Annexe, Canberra. Rolled out 22 Jan 1997 as silver RAAF "A52-319", displayed inside AWM, but moved Jan 2020 to storage at Mitchell.
