The de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito was a British twin-engine shoulder-winged multi-role combat aircraft, introduced during the Second World War. It was one of few operational front-line aircraft of the era whose frame was constructed almost entirely of wood. Nicknamed The Wooden Wonder, it was affectionately as the "Mossie" to its crews. The total number of DH98 Mosquito aircraft built was 7,781, the type serving with the main Allied air forces, including both the United States and Russia.

When Mosquito production began in 1941 it was the fastest propeller driven operational aircraft in the world. The first variant was an unarmed, high-speed, high-altitude photo-reconnaissance aircraft. Originally conceived as an unarmed fast bomber, the Mosquito's use evolved during the war into many roles including low to medium-altitude daytime tactical bomber, high-altitude night bomber, pathfinder, day or night fighter, fighter-bomber, intruder, and maritime strike aircraft. It was also used by the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) as a fast transport to carry small high-value cargoes to, and from, neutral countries, through enemy-controlled airspace. The crew of two, pilot and navigator, sat side by side, but a single passenger could ride in the aircraft's bomb bay when necessary.

The Mosquito FB Mk. VI was often flown in special raids, such as Operation Jericho, an attack on Amiens Prison in early 1944, and precision attacks against military intelligence, security and police facilities (such as Gestapo headquarters). On the 10th anniversary of the Nazi' seizure of power in 1943, a morning Mosquito attack knocked out the main Berlin broadcasting station while Hermann Goering was speaking, putting his speech off the air. Goering later said: "It makes me furious when I see the Mosquito. I turn green and yellow with envy. There is nothing the British do not have. They have the geniuses and we have the nincompoops."

The Mosquito flew with the RCAF and other air forces in the European, Mediterranean and Italian theatres. After the end of the Second World War Spartan Air Services flew 10 ex-RAF Mosquitoes, mostly B.35's plus one of only six PR.35's built, for high-altitude photographic survey work in Canada. There are approximately 30 non-flying Mosquitos around the world with five airworthy examples, four in the United States, and one in Canada. Harold Skaarup web page and Wikipedia

Delivered directly into storage at RAF St. Athan 26 Aug 1945. One of 76 FB.Mk. VI's purchased by New Zealand from the UK 26 Feb 1947. Ferried to NZ by Flight Lieutenant White and W/O H.G. Rennie, arriving on 28 Mar 1947. Assigned to 75 Sqn RNZAF at Ohakea, with serial NZ2328. On active service with the squadron, often as the CO's aircraft. Retired in 1952 when the RNZAF replaced Mosquitos with DH Vampires. One of 19 surplus Mosquitos sold to Aircraft Supplies Ltd. who attempted to export them to the USA. This was blocked by the NZ government and NZ2328 was later re-sold to Mr. Jas. Clarke. Wings were cut off and burnt, and the fuselage was towed 570 km behind a tractor to Mr. Clarke's farm, where it remained in open storage for nearly 20 years.

Fuselage and other components were recovered from the Clarke farm in 1972 by the Ferrymead Aeronautical Society in Christchurch for future static display restoration. New tailplane was fabricated by Glyn Powell of Mosquito Aircraft Restorations. In 2006 the Society built a dedicated workshop for the Mosquito project. As of 2023 the restoration of the wooden fuselage is largely complete. It forms the basis of a composite airframe that will also use components of ex-RNZAF Mosquito HR339, such as the wing, undercarriage and engine cowlings.

Delivered directly into storage. One of 80 Mosquitos sold to RNZAF in 1947-48. Ferried by air, leaving Pershore 24 Jul 1947. Arrived at Ohakea NZ 21 Aug 1947. Allocated to 75 Sqn but ferried to Woodbourne for storage in either 1950 or 1952. Sold as surplus to Aircraft Supplies Ltd. 20 Apr 1953 but was later re-tendered and sold to farmer C. Hayman in 1956. Disassembled and trucked to Hayman's farm near Waimate.

Around 1975, remains (principally fuselage) plus forward fuselage of NZ2324 were acquired by Ted Packer and Philip Burns of Christchurch from the Hayman farm for an intended restoration. In 1988, components were donated to RNZAF Museum.

Currently a collection of unrestored parts held by the RNZAF Museum at Wigram; includes components from NZ2334, NZ2382 and NZ2395, which together may form the basis of a future restoration.

Merlin 25

Built in Oct 1945 and delivered directly into storage. One of 76 FB.Mk. VI's purchased by New Zealand from the UK in 1947-48. Ferried to NZ, arriving at Ohakea in Mar 1947. Flown into storage at Woodbourne, then briefly into service with 75 Sqn. Last flight 21 Apr 1952.

Stored until Jul 1956 when it was sold as surplus to farmer John R. Smith. Disassembled (including cutting fuselage and outer wing panels) and transported to Smith's farm in Mapua. Re-assembled and stored in a shed. Mr. Smith took measures to preserve the wooden airframe against insects and inhibited engines against corrosion. He also completed some minor restorations and added missing parts over the years.

John Smith passed away in 2019 and his family decided to have several of the airframes from his collection preserved and restored by the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre at Marlborough NZ. Disassembled and transported from the Smith farm in Aug-Sep 2020. Restoration and repainting completed at Omaka 2020-2021. Engines restored to running condition; first engine runs 8 Nov 2021. Wears TE910 serial but 487 RNZAF squadron colours and markings EG-D.
