Douglas Dakota

Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum
Development of the Douglas DC-3 started in early 1935 with the prototype flying by the end of the year. The first production aircraft was delivered to American Airlines in July 1936 and soon orders were pouring in from US and overseas airlines. The US Air Corps became interested in the DC-3 and ordered a military version, called the C-47 or Dakota. It had many capabilities, including dropping paratroops and supplies, evacuating the wounded, troop transportation and glider towing. Eventually, about 10,000 C-47s were built for the US military.
During WW II, the Royal Air Force received about 1,930 Dakotas and they became the RAF's main wartime transport aircraft. The RCAF took delivery of its first Dakota in March 1943, and at its peak had 169 on strength. Within Canada, they were operated by four transport squadrons and several ferry squadrons.
Overseas, Dakotas equipped RCAF 437 Squadron in Europe and RCAF 435 and 436 Squadrons in South East Asia. 437 Squadron was formed in England September 1944, where it supported the British and Canadian Armies fighting in Europe. Its most important actions involved glider towing for the airborne landings at Arnhem and the Rhine crossing at Wesel.435 and 436 Squadrons were formed in India in October 1944. They flew Dakotas in support of the British 14th Army in Burma where they dropped supplies to the British troops fighting the Japanese in the jungle.
At the end of WW II, all three squadrons were transferred back to England to provide air transport for the Canadian occupation forces in Germany. Dakotas continued in service with the Canadian Armed Forces until 1989, when 402 Squadron, based in Winnipeg, retired the last of them. Of the nearly 13,000 DC-3s built, many are still in service today, over 75 years after the aircraft's first flight.
The Museum's Dakota was built for the USAAF and was delivered to the Royal Air Force in February 1944 as FZ692 and the Royal Canadian Air Force 437 Squadron in September 1944. It was later renumbered as 12945 as part of the Canadian Armed Forces where it served with 424 Squadron for Search & Rescue at CFB Trenton. It performed JATO ignition in flight at the 1970 Canadian National Exhibition Air Show on the Toronto waterfront.
After it was struck off strength by the Canadian Armed Forces in 1973, the aircraft ended up with Environment Canada, where it was used for mineral and environmental surveys. C-GRSB was donated to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in May 2014.
FZ692 has been restored to the paint scheme it would have worn at the end of World War II with 437 Squadron RCAF. FZ692 flew 208 operational trips with 437 Squadron and 16 with 233 Squadron for a total of 224. It ended up flying hundreds of individual legs between airfields in Europe. FZ692 participated in two major airborne operations, Normandy and the Rhine Crossing. It carried 298 casualties to medical aid and repatriated 456 prisoners of war. It carried over 5,100 passengers to destinations around Europe and carried over two hundred tons of freight (414,368 lbs). CWHM

Ex USAAF C-47A-5-DK, serial number 42-92713. With No. 168 (HT) Squadron in 1944, operating between UK and Italy. Based at Gibralter by August 1944. Used by No. 124 (Ferry) Squadron, RCAF Station Rockcliffe, Ontario, to pick up and deliver ferry pilots across Canada. Crashed while delivering ferry pilots to pick up Cornells. Pilot lost control while attempting a go around. Subsequent investigation revealed that starboard elevator lock had not been removed before take off at Minot, ND. This was greatest loss of life in any RCAF accident up to that time. Struck off 25 October 1946.

Ferry Flight 1946-09-15 to 1946-09-15
124 (Ferry) FU (RCAF) Minot, North Dakota
Dakota aircraft 962 took off at Minot, North Dakota at 0930 hours CST 15 September 1946 andproceeded to Estevan, Saskatchewan, arriving at approximately 1015 hours CST. The aircraft waswithout fore and aft control aside from the slight amount available from the use of the trim tab.
The pilot of 962 decided to attempt a landing at Estevan at 1015 hours and carried out a normalor possibly a bit wider than normal circuit with the wheels down at approximately half flap untilthe aircraft was at the down-wind end of the runway at an approximate altitude of 75 feet. Theaircraft then levelled out and commenced to climb. After climbing approximately 100 feet, theaircraft levelled out momentarily and then commenced to climb again with the wheels retracting. The second climb was very steep and was maintained until the aircraft stalled, dropped the portwing, and dove vertically into the ground and exploded on impact.
It appears that the pilot filed his flight plan by radio AFTER taking off from Minot (mostunusual) and that there was no further radio communication from Dakota 962. It was speculatedthat the pilot knew the condition of his elevator almost immediately after take off but maintainedcontrol through use of trim tabs and elected to continue to Estevan, to effect a landing with aslightly reduced fuel load.
The unit is No. 124 (Fy ) Squadron as opposed to Communications as indicated in a number ofsources
The pilots had already ferried the Cornells to Estevan and were heading back to R.C.A.F. StationRockcliffe when the Dakota Mk. IIIN accident occurred.
At the time of the unfortunate flying accident, No. 124 (Fy) Squadron, under the command ofSquadron Leader E. A. Bland AFC, was part of the Royal Canadian Air Force's No. 9 (T) Group.
Twenty RCAF pilots and one ground crew man were killed

The aircraft crossed a valley and struck on the other side against a 650-foot height. Eight persons were killed, 14 seriously injured and two uninjured. At the time he had 1,485 hours of flying including 379 solo hours on Dakotas. Accident ruled to be due to "culpable negligence" ".

After waiting two to three days for the replacement wheel without receiving it, the two nurses decided to hitch a ride back to England with whatever was leaving. On 19Sep44 a replacement wheel was flown to Melsbroek, but No.48 Squadron was then heavily involved in Operation Market Garden. Only on 26Sep44 did the Commanding Officer realize that he had lost track of KG592 and its four crew.
The appropriate flight commander and his deputy were dispatched to Belgium but could not find any trace of the Dakota or the crew. A Court of inquiry held 14Nov44 was unable to conclude when the aircraft left Melsbroek or the circumstances of its disappearance. It was presumed to have been lost over the English Channel.

Pratt & Whitney R-1830-92 Twin Wasp
This aircraft was built in 1943 at Douglas Aircraft's subsidiary plant at Oklahoma City. Allocated the USAAF serial 43-49308 the aeroplane didn't actually serve with the Americans and was eventually taken on charge by the Royal Air Force on November 10, 1944. Given the RAF serial KK116 the aircraft was despatched to Burma where she flew as aircraft "T' in South East Asia Command's 435Sqn.
In late 1945 425Sqn returned home to Britain and KK116 made the long journey to its new home at RAF Down Ampney in Gloucestershire. Here, the aircraft was coded 'OFM-T' and it served with the squadron for a number of years. During its time with 435Sqn it took part in the legendary Berlin Airlift carrying much-needed food and supplies to the besieged population of the German capital.
When her useful days were deemed to be over KK116 was ferried to 1 MU at Kirkbride, Cumbria for storage and awaited an uncertain future. Saved from obscurity in March 1952 she was placed on the UK civil register as G-AMPY by Jerome Anthony Wilson of Liverpool. Operated by Starways Ltd it flew from Liverpool's Speke Airport until December 1957 when it was ostensibly sold in Jordan and transferred to the Jordanian register as JY-ABE. However the sale to Jordan was never completed and in May 1958 the aircraft returned to the British register and to Starways at Liverpool, in whose name it was registered. Starways eventually operated G-AMPY until late 1963, and in early 1964 the ownership of the aircraft changed to Aviation Overhauls Ltd.
The aircraft was reportedly sold in Iceland in June 1964 and registered as TF-FIO, but the aircraft was back on the UK register again in August 1965, still registered to Aviation Overhauls Ltd. It is not known if it ever flew north to Iceland.
Between February and November 1966, G-AMPY was leased to Irefly, but in January 1968 it was on sale in the USA, registered to Aviation Enterprises Inc of Cedarburg, Wisconsin as N15751. It remained undelivered, however, and in November 1970 G-AMPY was back on the British register owned by The New Guarantee Trust of Jersey Ltd. Under that ownership, it was operated by Intra Airways (which was renamed Jersey European) until the end of 1980 when it was registered to Field Aviation Ltd of London-Heathrow.
A proposed sale in 1981, this time to Clyden Airways of Dublin, saw the aircraft registered as EI-BKJ, but yet again the sale fell through and the aircraft returned to the British register.
Air Atlantique Ltd purchased the aircraft in February 1982, initially using it for cargo work, then equipping it as a tanker for spraying detergent on oil spills at sea and latterly in a 36-seat passenger configuration.
In July 2007 G-AMPY performed the airline's final passenger flying DC-3 flight (to date) and has since been relegated to airshow and film appearances. Over the winter of 2009/2010 it was re-equipped as a spray aircraft and remained on standby all winter.
Now owned by Terry Beezhold, who lives in Washington state. He bought the plane during the pandemic and brought it over to the States from England in May 2022. The aircraft is currently registered as N435DK and she wears the RAF serial she wore when taking part in the Berlin Airlift. Special dispensation was issued by the Civil Aviation Authority for her to carry her original RAF serial. Source: Classic Air Force and Bob Schilling.
