45 Group RAF Transport Command Dorval, Quebec. Dakota IV aircraft KN 409 crashed on approach to Prestwick, Scotland during a trans-Atlantic ferry flight after a stopover in Reykjavik, Iceland. The aircraft was last heard from on approach to Prestwick and crashed crashed into the Firth of Clyde, 4 miles west of Irvine with no trace of the aircrew being found

Pilot/1st Officer Flying Officer JW Newman (RCAF), Pilot Captain Flight Lieutenant HR Hannaford DFC (RAAF), FS A Jamieson (RAFVR) and Warrant Officer Class 2 P Lavin (RAFVR) were missing, presumed killed in this flying accident

The missing have no known grave and all are commemorated on the Ottawa War Memorial
