Halifax BII aircraft JD 259 NP-R was shot down by night fighter pilot Oberleutnant Wilhelm Telge of the Stab II/NJG 1, flying a Bf 110 G-4 from St Trond, Belgium while on an operation to bomb targets in Mulheim, a German industrial city in the Ruhr Valley

Pilot FS Cavanagh attempted to crash-land the Halifax at Leest, Mechelen, Antwerpen, Belgium, but struck high-tension wires just as he was about to touch down. The bomber exploded and crashed with the loss of the entire crew

There were 44 Allied aircraft lost to enemy action during night operations on this date
