3 OTU Patricia Bay, BC, Canso 9701 crashed on landing at Saanich Inlet after a bombing exercise. Investigation concluded that glassy water conditions, and sun angle on the water were the causes of this crash
Pilot Officer GT Kingswood (RCAF), Pilot Officer AB Crawford (RCAF)(USA) and Pilot Officer RB Fraser (RCAF) were killed, Sergeant FE Boalch (RCAF) missing, presumed killed. Four air crew survived, Sergeant WB Harris (RCAF), Sergeant L Desjardine (RCAF), Sergeant HE Golis (RCAF) and Sergeant AL MacLean (RCAF), all badly injured. The wreckage of the aircraft was located by a privately owned submersible vehicle being towed by the Canadian Coast Guard Ship John P. Tully, on maintenance test in June, 2005.
