Marissel French National Cemetery, France Lancaster Mk III ND811 F2-T After droppings markers and bombs the aircraft was hit in starboard wing by flak, knocking out both engines and setting fire to the fuel tanks. Hibbert and Flight Sergeant Leeder RAAF had both been injured by flak shrapnel. Pilot Bazalgette ordered the remaining crew to bail out, which they did, landing safely and being made POW. He then turned the aircraft away from the village and attempted to land the stricken bomber, awash in leaked fuel. The moment it touched the ground it exploded, killing Bazalgette, Hibbert and Leeder.
