Mine laying (Gardening) off the Frisian Islands the aircraft encountered a flak-ship which fired on them, hitting and disabling the port outer engine and the aircraft hydraulics. They completed dropping their mines, manually cranking the bomb bay doors open, before turning for home. They only reached 3000 feet before the port inner engine also failed. Pilot Gray set the aircraft down in the sea and all crewmen escaped to the dinghy. As W/Op Sergeant Gordon Hansen Low had got a locate request off before the aircraft was hit they had a good chance at pick-up. Twenty-two hours later they were found by the RAF Rescue Launch.
