Gladstone, in Avro B 3120 collided over the Thames estuary off Purfleet with Avro B 3143. Gladstone, a Canadian, drowned in the river because the crash knocked him unconscious. 2Lt Thomas Henry Timmis (British) pilot of B-3143 was rescued from the river and survived.
