427 Lion Squadron (Ferte Manus Certas) RAF Leeming Halifax BIII aircraft LV 923 ZL-W was in a mid-air collision with 622 Squadron Lancaster III aircraft ND 767 GI-D returning from a night trip to Nuremberg, Germany. Both bombers crashed near Rachecourt, Luxembourg

Pilot Officer J Moffat (RCAF) was the only survivor from the mid-air collision

Pilot Officer Moffatt evaded, avoiding capture with the help of various local citizens and the Belgian Resistance. He later joined the French Resistance for a time until he was liberated by an American Army unit on September 8, 1944 and returned to RCAF Rockcliffe, Ottawa October 22, 1944
