Pilot Officer Gibson evaded for a time but was captured near Paris, France 1944-07-14 and sent to Fresnes Prison in France. He was one of 168 Allied Airmen deported to Germany and sent to Buchenwald Concentration Camp. The German Luftwaffe later intervened on behalf of these prisoners and had them transferred to Luftwaffe controlled Prisoner of War camps. Gibson was slightly wounded inside a railcar while being transported to Buchenwald when a guard opened fire on the railcar stopped for inspection while still in France. He was transferred to Stalag Luft 3 until liberated and was safe, back in the United Kingdom1945-05-11
