9 Squadron (Per Noctem Volamus). Target - Argentan, Orne, France. The crew of Lancaster aircraft ME 579 were returning from the target and were descending through cloud when they crashed. The aircraft struck high ground and disintegrated on impact at Belvoir Castle near Bottesford, Leicestershire, England. Sergeant W.F. Smith, and four crew members, not Canadians, were also killed.
