50 Squadron (From Defence To Attack). Flying Officer Smith had completed 50 operations when his Lancaster aircraft ED 828 went missing from a trip to Bochum, Germany, enemy action. Flying Officer M.D. Hicks, Sergeant A. Hunter (RAF), FS A.J. Mills (RAF), and Flight Lieutenant P.J. Stone D.F.C. (RAF) were also killed. Two others of the crew, not Canadians, missing believed killed.
