299 Sqn RAF Stirling IV aircraft LJ 819 was shot down off the D-Day invasion beaches as part of Operation MALLARD, after releasing a glider and dropping supplies, eight miles north-west of Caen, France.
Flying Officer JH Clark (RCAF) and Pilot Officer AL Coates (RAAF) were killed. Flying Officer FA Boyce (RCAF), Warrant Officer Class 1 JH Munroe (RCAF), Pilot Officer TH Schrump (RCAF) and Sergeant EH Mills (RAFVR) missing, presumed killed.
