299 Sqn RAF Stirling IV aircraft LJ 819 was shot down off the D-Day invasion beaches as part of Operation MALLARD, after releasing a glider and dropping supplies, eight miles north-west of Caen, France. Warrant Officer Class 1 JH Munroe (RCAF)was missing, presumed killed. Warrant Officer Class 1 Munroe has no known grave and is commemorated on the Runnymede War Memorial.
