426 Thunderbird Squadron (On Wings of Fire). Lancaster aircraft DS 689 was shot up by enemy fighter aircraft during an attack against Stuttgart, Germany. The Lancaster caught fire and two of the crew bailed out over Wassy, France and they reported that the aircraft crashed near them. Two Canadians, P/Os M.B. Summers, J. Wilde, G. Davies (RAF), P.E. Newland (RAF), and Sergeant G.E. Aldous (RAF) were all killed in the aircraft. One Canadian, Flying Officer E.M. Beaton, and one RAF crew member were the two who had bailed out and they were Evaders. There was an extra pilot on board to gain operational experience.
