626 Squadron (To Strike And Not To Yield). Lancaster aircraft LL 959 was shot down by flak ten miles south of the target Merseburg, Germany at Breda, the aircraft exploded and burned. Flying Officer V.H. Halstead, Pilot Officer A.M. Walker, FS C.C. Merriman, and two RAF crew members were also killed. The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Nelson was blown clear and was taken Prisoner of War.
