625 Squadron (We Avenge). Lancaster aircraft W 5009 was shot down by an enemy night fighter aircraft during night ops, against Nuremberg, Germany. This was Warrant Officer Johnston's 21st. operation and his was the one of 108 Allied aircraft lost this night. FS L.G. Anderson and five RAF members of the crew were also killed. addendum 2: See page 366. Five RAF members of the crew, Sit. T.M. Nicholls, Sgt.s N. L. Wallis, P. R. Bielby, PO.s F. R. Smith, and R.H. Pitman were also killed.
