626 Squadron (To Strike And Not To Yield). Aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and exploded in mid-air, crashing over a large area near Marsal, Moselle, France at 18.10. Warrant Officer H.F. Binder, F/Os J.P. Hutchinson (RAF), P.H.W. Young (RAF), Sgt& B.R. Bowditch (RAF), R. Edgeworth (RAF), A. Hodgson (RAF), and FS K.J. Macey (RAF) were also killed. Sergeant Bowditch was the extra pilot and was on board to gain experience before taking his own crew on operations. Pilot Officer Gooclkey had survived a 12 Squadron Lancaster crash at Grimsby, England on September 6, 1943.
