Berrigan, Leonard Thomas (Flight Lieutenant)

Home in Dunedin, Prince Edward Island; enlisted Charlottetown, 25 October 1940. Trained at No.6 BGS (graduated 29 September 1941). No citation other than "Completed...many successful operations against the enemy in which (he has) displayed high skill, fortitude and devotion to duty." Killed in Action 24/25 March 1944 (Lancaster ND581); name on Runnymede Memorial. Award 7 Squadron (Per Diem Per Noctum), Pathfinder Force. Aircraft was shot down by a night fighter over the Freidrichshain district in NE Berlin. Bodies of the crew were initially buried at the Lazarett in Doberitz district. Post war authorities were unable to locate the bodies at Doberitz, hence their place on the Runnymede Memorial. Distinguished Flying Cross - No.7 Squadron (deceased) - Award effective 24 May 1944 as per London Gazette of that date and AFRO 1444/44 dated 7 July 1944, presented to next-of-kin, 1 December 1948.
