Crew were on a night navigation training exercise from their home station in Norfolk. They had taken off during the late evening of the 18th August and had flown west into Wales. At just before 22:40 the aircraft was heard flying up the Ogwen valley and was then heard to crash.

464 Australia Squadron (Aequo Anima). Ventura aircraft AE 688 took off from RAF Sculthorpe on 18 August 1943 to carry out a night flying training exercise during which the aircraft crashed into a hillside in Wales at Llandwrog. The aircraft was considerably off course at the time but the cause of the crash was unknown. Casualties included Flt. Sgt's. E.J.E. Beaudry and A.S. Clegg (RCAF), Flying Officer L. Fullerton (RCAF), and Flt. Sgt. J.A. Johnston (RAAF).
