Barker enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps, and volunteered for Airborne forces. He was seriously injured in the crash and died later in hospital.
Aircraft took off at 12:52 on a re-supply mission to Arnhem in support of Operation Market Garden. It was hit by flak and crashed near the pumping station at Bosschenhoofd, Holland.
