Sopwith Admiralty Type 861 Seaplane, No.851 teat flight on 1914-11-01: Mahl was the Sopwith test pilot on this flight. The new plane dived into the water off Netley shortly after take-off on its first flight. It was salvaged and re-built. Mahl, the test pilot, survived; but Reginald Jordan Alston, the Sopwith designer was killed.
