Took off in Wellington Mark X (Sqn code: OW- Bomber Command) on a sortie to Dortmund Germany.

The Wellington was hit by flak which started a fire in the forward fuselage and knocked out the intercom. The pilot Sergeant S Gaunt (Amer) RCAF first ordered the aircraft abandoned but after regaining control and the fire being blown out headed home minus the two who had jumped. He reached base safely along with Navigator Sergeant A T McCormick RAF and WOp Sergeant J.H. Jones (RCAF) who had managed to repair the intercom en-route.
