156 Squadron (We Light The Way), Pathfinder Force, RAF Warboys Lancaster III aircraft ED 598 GT was shot down by a night fighter at Hemmingstedt, Germany during an operation to Hamburg, Germany. Pilot Officer MC Staples (RCAF), Flying Officer RE Goodwin DFC (RAF), Sergeant LJ Jones (RAFVR), Sergeant B Marshall (RAFVR), Flight Lieutenant JA Phillips (RAFVR), Flight Lieutenant BF Smith DFC (RAFVR), and F/T WJ Smith DFC (RAFVR) were killed.
