408 Goose Squadron (For Freedom). FS Smith was on his 6th trip when his Hampden aircraft AD 803 was shot down by a German Naval vessel off Endelave Island whilst engaged in a mine-laying operation off Denmark. FS W.F. Millerd and Sergeant N.W. Smith (RAF) were also killed. One Canadian, Sergeant H.J. Copeman, was taken Prisoner of War. There were two 408 Sqdn. aircraft lost on this date. Please see FS R.J.
