576 Squadron (Carpe Diem). Lancaster aircraft LM 651 had the starboard outer engine damaged by flak on September 24, 1944. FS McGowan was hit in the chest and was admitted to U.S. Army Hospital at Stenhow Kettering, North Hampshire, England. He died of his wounds a few days later.
