578 Squadron (Accuracy). Halifax aircraft LK 794 was outward bound for Caen, France when the starboard inner engine caught fire and the aircraft became uncontrollable. The aircraft crashed and the 9,000 bomb load exploded on impact two miles south of Bishan, Berkshire, England. The force of the explosion spread wreckage over a four-mile area. Five of the crew, not Canadians, were also killed, one Canadian bailed out to safety.
