51 Squadron (Swift And Sure) RAF Dishforth, Whitley V aircraft Z 9202 MP-H failed to return from a bombing operation over Emden, Germany. On the homeward-bound leg of the flight, the aircraft was shot down by night fighter pilot Oberfeldwebel Siegfried Ney of the 5/NJG 2, who had taken off from Bergen airfield. The Whitley crashed into the North Sea 10 km west of Texel Island, Netherlands. Sergeant JH Durning (RCAF), Flight Sergeant OH Burchell (RCAF), Sergeant FGW Roberts (RAF), Sergeant RA Priestly (RAF), Sergeant HJ Groom (RAF) and Sergeant EA Spicer (RAF) were were killed and commemorated on the Runnymede War Memorial.
