51 Squadron (Swift And Sure). Whitley V aircraft N1405 was shot down by flak just off the northern tip of Sylt Island, Germany. Flight Lieutenant JE Baskerville (RAF) Can), Flying Officer EO Fennell (RAF)(Can), LAC(AG) L Close (RAF) and LAC(AG) WG Newton (RAF) killed and Sergeant BD Shepperson (RAF) missing. This was the first Bomber Command aircraft lost attacking a land target in Germany.
