Avro Anson
The Avro Anson was known by a number of nicknames including "Faithful Annie" or "Flying Greenhouse". It was the first aircraft to be flown by the Royal Canadian Air Force to have a retractable undercarriage, which was a comparative novelty in 1936. In 1940, a Canadian government owned company, Federal Aircraft Limited, was created in Montreal to manufacture the Anson for Canadian use. Nearly 3,000 Anson aircraft were produced and, in the early days of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP), the Anson was the standard trainer for many pilots, observers (navigators), wireless operators and bomb aimers. More than 20,000 aircrew received training on the Anson. Ex RAF W1701. To No. 3 Training Command on 11 December 1940, for use by No. 8 Service Flying Training School at Moncton, NB. Category C damage at Upper Sackville, NB at 13:00 on 22 February 1941. Nosed over after forced landing in snow. Temporary repairs on site allowed aircraft to be flown back to Moncton for further repairs. Category D5 damage on 9 August 1941, when a broken brake cable resulted in this aircraft taxiing into parked Anson 6285. To Eastern Air Command on 11 December 1941, for use by No. 2 Air Navigation School at Pennfield Ridge, NB. To No. 2 Training Command on 5 June 1942, for use by No. 1 Air Navigation School at Rivers, Manitoba. To storage on 16 November 1942. To MacDonald Brothers for overhaul, 5 May to 20 June 1943. To No. 2 Training Command when completed. With No. 7 Service Flying Training School at Fort McLeod, Alberta in fall of 1943. With Central Navigation School at Rivers Camp, Manitoba when it suffered a Category A crash near Carberry, Manitoba on 11 March 1944. At least 2 fatalities.
