ATFERO, the Atlantic Ferry Organization, Dorval (Montreal): the first stage of the transatlantic ferrying of aircraft. The Ministry of Aircraft Production (Lord Beaverbrook) agreed with the Canadian Pacific Railway to provide ground facilities and civilian crews; the first test delivery formation flight, led by Don Bennett, was in November 1940. On 20 July 1941 the RAF Atlantic Ferry Service was raised to command status as RAF Ferry Command (Wikipedia, RAF Ferry Command).
Aircraft ferrying started with ATFERO (Atlantic Ferry Organization), a crucial World War II initiative established in 1941 (growing out of early Canadian Pacific Railway air services in 1940) to fly combat aircraft directly from North American factories to Britain, bypassing dangerous and slow sea transport. It then moved to Ferry Command and finally to 45 Group Transport Command. (Greg, 2026-10-17)
