1916-05-01: Read was injured in Bleriot XI, 2854; when he attempted to turn with insufficient flying speed. His observer, 61 Flt.Sgt. William Thomas James McCudden was killed in the crash.
1916-10-07: embarked for European Front with 45Sqn, by sea.
1916-10-21: posted to 11Sqn, RFC.
1917-03-17: Read was OK in FE2b, 7694; when he was brought down near Fricourt by hostile aircraft while on recce. His air-gunner, 2Lt Larry Nevile-Smith was also OK.
1917-08-10: Read made Flight Commander and Captain.
1917-09-15: Read relinquished his commission. and is granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant.
