1917-04-05: Brookes was wounded in BE2d, 5787; when it was hit by machine gun fire from the trenches, causing a forced landing at Duissans, during a photography mission Brookes' observer-gunner, P1581 2AM Joseph Henry Bolton (British) was killed in the action. This injury marked the end on his WWI career. Brookes ended as Air Vice Marshall of the RCAF in WWII.
