Smith was American born and was shot down and made a POW on 1918-01-12. He was repatriated on 1919-02-28. His air gunner, 2nd-Lieut James Hamilton Reid Smith (British) was killed in the crash. Thomas had just taken off when his aircraft was hit by fire from an enemy aircraft. He landed in enemy territory, just south-west of Charleroi, Belgium on a photo reconnaissance mission.
