1917-08-09: Billings was missing in Nieuport 23; B-3456; last seen during combat and reported to be brought down near Westroosebeke, Belgium on offensive patrol. He was taken POW at the crash scene, but later died of his crash injuries and wounds. The burial place used by his captors is not known. It was probably destroyed by artillery bombardment during the war.
