Van Buskirk died in a flying accident while in training. As he was making a landing approach to the CFS aerodrome, on his 2nd solo flight when he allowed the flying speed of his Avro to drop too low, resulting in a stall and immediate nose-dive to the ground. He died the next day from his injuries.
