Applebye enlisted in the CEF on 1914-09-25. On 1918-01-27, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. Appleby was posted to 104 Sqn on 1918-05-17 and scored 6 victories as an observer aboard D.H.9s. Lieutenant Appleby became an American citizen on 1935-02-04. He returned to military service during World War II serving as a recruiting officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1941-05-30 until 1944-11-25.
