Bottrill enlisted in the 4th Batallion CEF in April, 1915. He served in France with them until transferring to the RAF as an gunner/observer on 1918-07-09. He was a good gunner, and scored the five downed enemy aircraft necessary to make 'ace'. His pilots identities have not been determined.
