Brown enlisted as a private in the 1st Canadian Division Signal Company, CEF At Valcartier Quebec on September 21, 1914. He had previously been involved with the militia in Victoria in a similar role After two years with Signals he transferred to the RFC. After flight training he was assigned to 84 Sqn flying the SE5a. He scored nine victories with them between November, 1917 and April, 1918, when he was transferred to Home Establishment where he served until wars' end.
