On 21 April 1918 Brown was on a routine patrol when he noticed a Camel from his squadron being flown by 'Wop' May being chased by a German Fokker Triplane flown by Manfred Von Richtofen. He dove after and fired on the Triplane, which crashed. Examination showed Richtofen had died from a single bullet. The RAF credited Brown with this victory. History and time have shown that it was more likely that the fatal bullet was fired by a ground machine gun.
