The National Archives offers Flying Officer Hamilton “Evaded capture after opening of Campo 78, Sulmona, Italy; rejoined British Forces in Italy.” wherein ~2000 POWs escaped the Italians on Sep 8 1943. (About 1500 recaptured by the Germans)

On the website describing Malcolm Benitz’s escape from the same camp, he makes references to F/O Ray E Hamilton who made it to the Allied lines at Campobasso on Oct 25.

There is a record of a P/O Hamilton in the 250 Sqn ORB flying Tomahawk AK944 as escort to Bostons on 25 June 1942 noted as Failed to Return. (This was the one and only mention of anyone named Hamilton from April through July for 250 Sqn). Rob Forbes
