While attacking three tanks, his engine was hit by machine-gun fire so had to make a forced landing in snow, in an isolated spot near Rocca de Mezzo in Central Italy

He got out of his aircraft and made his way to a small hut a short distance away, where he emptied his pockets and burned his identity card. Eventually regained allied lines near the Sangro River
