In November, 1917 he applied for pilot training and was sent to the 72TS Montrose, Scotland. He took off and was climbing away when the engine lost power. He tried to turn back but the aircraft stalled and nose-dived to the ground at Charleton Rd. Lt. Thompson was killed in the crash.
