42 Squadron (Fortiter In Re). Beaufort aircraft was carrying a torpedo when it was damaged in air action. The crew dropped flares just prior to the aircraft crashing into some cables. The torpedo exploded before the aircraft hit the ground at Speedgate Farm near Farningham, Kent. The RAF pilot, Sergeant D.B. Heron, was also killed.
