After flight training Rath was posted to 29 Squadron on the Western Front on 1918-06-05. He scored 12 victories flying the SE5a. Rath collided with another 29 Squadron plane at 12,000 feet over Tournai on 1918-10-25 and crashed on the allied side of the lines. His body was recovered.
