1917-09-22: Payne died in RE-8, A-4217; when he side-slipped at 200 feet, nose-dived and burst into flames on take off for artillery patrol. 2Lt Payne the pilot, died, Lt Norman Eric Wallace, his observer was badly burnt, but survived the accident.
